Paprika Day of Kalocsa
Kalocsa is a one thousand-year-old town on the left bank of River Danube. Our first
king, Saint Stephen founded the Archbishopric of Kalocsa here. From that time the
town became an economic, administrational, ecclesiastic and cultural centre. Nowadays
it is famous for its Baroque buildings and monuments, its folk art and red pepper
(paprika). The historic downtown was created by the archbishopric, the Palace of the
Archbishop, its famous and rich Library, the Italian Baroque splendour of the Main
Cathedral all form a significant part of universal culture. Its folk art was
generated by the farmers living in the town and nearby. The reminiscences and
history of local folk art are preserved by the Old Hungarian Countryhouse and Károly
Viski Museum, the traditional folk dance is kept up by local folk dance groups.
The third significance of the town is its “red gold”, the spice paprika. Besides
the Szeged region Kalocsa is the other centre of producing and processing paprika.
Its Paprika Museum and its significance in terms of paprika research are unique.
If you visit our town this year and participate in the events of the Paprika Days of
Kalocsa, you will have the opportunity to become familiar with all the sights and rich
folk traditions of the town as well as to celebrate together with local people, having
fun at the fiesta, tasting the almost 50 varieties of specialities made from paprika.
It is more than one and a half decades since we revived the previously traditional
harvest fun.
The event, which included only a procession and a party at first and has been mentioned
as the Paprika Day of Kalocsa since 1989, has now become a two-week-long series
of programs. Besides folk dance shows several other remarkable artistic events
(exhibitions, concerts, sport and entertaining programs) have made it even more varied.
After 1998 the Paprika Days of Kalocsa were widened with the cooking competition of
meals made from paprika as well as the fiesta relating to it.
The Paprika Days is not only the holiday of visitors coming to Kalocsa but also the
holiday of all local families producing it and processors as well as companies that try
to do their best to make a reputation of "red gold" both in Hungary and abroad.
The Hungarians sit to the table whenever they are happy or sad. We serve one of our
national treasures on the table at the cooking competition of meals made from paprika
which makes the dishes red and makes the Hungarian cuisine famous and noted.
A wide range of use of paprika is presented at this competition from simple stews
and gulyás soup to the specialities of restaurants. The patron of the cooking
competition is Károly Unger, president of Hungarian National Gastronomical Association,
the members of the jury are all famous chefs, culinary experts and specialists.
The criteria of assessment are: colour, appearance, scent, taste harmony and flavour as well
as the condition of meals. However, there are some more factors which are considered such as
ingenuity, originality, quality, execution, accuracy of the recipe, the process of cooking
and serving. It is our pleasure to invite you to be quests of our white table in Kalocsa.

9th Blue Bird Festival
György Lakatos Liszt-awarded bassoonist, native of Kalocsa created a foundation to aid
sick children in 1991.
In this document he says: "There are many kinds of birds circling over the Sea of
Happiness, they are small, big, tiny, enormous, green, yellow and of course also blue.
They are bathing in sunshine, flying up and down encouraging the down-hearted and
singing for the pleasure of our hearts. Let us take care of their nests, the flight
of the young birds, let us not hurt them and if any of them should fly onto our
shoulders, let us listen to its song, let us not lock them into cages, even the Blue
Bird and even each other. Let us not lock anyone into the cage of intolerance,
hostility, lies, violance and war. Let us not lock but unlock cages. Let us open the
cages of sorrow, suffering, deprivation, disease, tears, bacause there are so many of
them that they are enough for all of us. Let us open them and let us help each other
to open them because this is the only way we can become happier."
The Festival, which has been organised for ten years, offers concerts of classical
and folk music, jazz, operas, ballets, theatre performances craft fairs, puppet-shows,
as well as exhibitions to residents and visitors.
